Stunning Ride and Drive Pony

History

Reggie has been with us for nearly 2 years and he’s taught his 78yo owner how to drive. Prior to coming here, where he does slightly more driving than riding, he came from a purely riding home where he had not driven in 2 years and he was very very unfit, his ridden work was barely once a month and he was morbidly obese. We took the journey getting him back to driving reasonably slowly and he was an angel from the very beginning. A perfect companion to a complete beginner, it’s been truly lovely to watch them both growing together. Prior to that ridden home he was in a driving home but we know very little about what he did whilst he was there.

Current Life

Reggie is on a fairly busy weekly schedule, driving 3 times a week and riding about the same amount. He is an extremely safe and steady drive who is always hoof perfect. He drove at his first competition just before Christmas and came 4th in his class, showing 7’s and 8’s in his Pace and Precision element. He is not the fastest driven pony which makes him perfect for a beginner driver and a great confidence giver. Ridden he can be excitable and is not a novice ride however, that makes him fun and forward although he can occasionally throw in a small buck when very excited. He’s capable of small show jumps and XC up to about 50cm’s comfortably but we’ve pushed him up to 60cm’s (seen below at Petworth Schooling Park) but he struggles at that height. He doesn’t rear or bolt, has no stable vices and is so easy to do, currently living out 24/7.

Medical Declaration

Reggie has is in the very early stages of Chronic Progressive Lymphedema (CPL) hence his price. His CPL is so well managed it’s fairly difficult to see now at first glance and has no affect on his way of going. It’s very simple to manage with just clipping his feathers off every 6 weeks or so, keeping him out as much as possible and barefoot behind (ideally all 4 barefoot but that’s not possible for us), that is all. He arrived with some sores which have healed beautifully and there a no further signs, however, because he is a little sensitive for clipping we mildly sedate him and he stands like a dream. Video’s, pictures and vets reports can be made available upon request.

What is CPL?

CPL is a disease of the lymphatic system where, due to poor lymphatic drainage, affected horses end up with thickened lower legs, often ending up with skin folds and nodules. The decreased lymphatic drainage coupled with insulation from heavy feathering creates the perfect environment for secondary bacterial and parasitic infections.

Treatment of CPL

There is no cure for CPL, but with good management most affected horses can live a comfortable and normal life. Clipping feathers helps to identify lesions and determine the extent of the problem. It also helps to make the horse more comfortable, allow the legs to breathe and allows us to treat and prevent secondary infections. Clipping affected legs can be sore and sometimes these cases need to be sedated.  Preventing and treating secondary bacterial infections is also important. Keeping the horse’s legs clean and dry can help to prevent bacterial infections, and preventative antiparasitic treatments may also be recommended. Daily exercise can also help increase lymphatic drainage.

Excellent Boy!!
He’s a super pony for everything when it comes to handling:
Great for the farrier, dentist and the vet. Amazing to load (see video below) and when he’s out he’s no different if he’s in company or on his own.

Perfect Home

He’ll suit any driving or riding home (or both), he can compete driven but isn’t a speedy nimble pony. He’s a SAFE and STEADY angel, a wonderful teacher for any beginner driver. He’d be great as a mother / daughter share for riding but isn’t a lead rein or first ridden due to his keen, forward going nature when ridden.
