14:2hh* Appaloosa x New Forest

Date of Foaling 1 April 2011, 10 years old

A registered Spotted Society Pony

Very beautiful!!

Sire: White Lightning

White Lightning was a registered ‘few spot’ with the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) UK Ltd

Dam: Afon Baytime Girl

Baytime Girl was a home bred New Forest Mare and a real favourite of her owners, with a lovely nature.

Afon Peppercorn was registered to the British Spotted Pony Society in early 2021. We have written confirmation from the Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) UK Ltd that they would register him as a part bred Appaloosa which could be arranged if required.

This super chilled out riding horse is a brilliant forward going hack or a competition horse who will just make you smile from ear to ear!! See this footage below of him out hacking with one of his driving buddies.

History: Born and bred in SE England, he’d stayed with his loving owner until the day he came to us. His education was never started at the ‘usual’ age of 3 or 4 due to complications in his owner’s life. He therefore lived very happily in his herd, having all of his cares and needs tended to. In mid-June 2020, his owner brought him in, away from the herd with the intention of training him. But there were a lot of distractions and a little was done with him but nothing of real momentum to get him up to a riding horse.

When he came to us it was with the complete understanding that his formal training would need to start from scratch, building up to backing and beyond. Which is exactly what we’ve done by trying him moving forward at a pace he’s comfortable with. Our end result is a very well balanced, forward going competition pony who would be a superb addition to any experienced equine home.

We can’t see Pepper making a showing horse as he’s always messing with his bit. He’s done this since the very first time we bitted him in a stable and feel it’s part of who he is. So we’d rather see him going to a PC type home with a competent teen or small adult.

Likes and Dislikes

Believe it or not Pepper is a really curious boy who always comes over to see us when we go into the field to poo pick or bring in another of the herd. He’s a cuddly boy (but on his own terms) however; so sweet and gentle with everything he does.

He also has a little Bro’mance going on with another trainee, Little Bee – please watch the video below of these guys in their field. I’ve never know such a sweet couple of boys who literally share everything, including their hay! Little Bee will try at dinner time to steal his dinner and Pepper will allow him to do that too (sometimes ). Such a sweet boy!!

And of course Pepper really REALLY likes to jump – see the video below and watch our first clue that jumping was going to be his ‘thing’!!

So after that amazing start with free jumping we did a few poles on the ground then cross poles and then this video below was his 6th time with a rider over any kind of fence. I truly adore this horse. No rushing, just calm, rhythmic and steadily controlled with all fences.

We taught him to go into a box calmly and without fuss and to date he’s a little star to load and will stand in the box for short periods of time but does like to see what’s going on. Please watch this video below to see how great he is to load.

Carrying on from the great success of a mini Arena XC clinic we went on. I thought it would be great experience for us to go to our local cross country schooling park and have a play. He continues to surprise and amaze us all with his exceptional scope. I will state that for his first time he did have a look at a just 2 of the jumps and the ditch but after his first look he’s great at taking a huge leap. Check out the compilation below…

It is our feeling that Afon Peppercorn will make an Amazing Pony Club or Riding Club All Rounder with the right competent teen or small adult. He’s not a novice horse; not only because he is still fairly green but he is also very forward and we can see out hacking he needs a calm quiet rider to prevent him from becoming a ‘jogger’.

Pepper does not have any vices, either ridden or in the stable. But he can sometimes become impatient at meal times and kick the door. It’s an occasional thing which we’ve prevented with a top door grill. He’s good with the farrier, dentist and at all aspects when being handled including to catch. However, he would suit a ‘quieter’ environment as something can still startle him due to him being feral until recently. We haven’t ever clipped him, as it’s just not been required whilst he was here, but we would encourage it to be done for the first time by a professional who is aware of his life to date.
