History

Clover is a big horse and arrived to us direct from Ireland after an exhausting 3 day journey. He was a very leggy and clumsy 3yo. With this in mind and the fact that we wanted to have years of eventing fun out of him we started him slowly as a 3yo by simply getting him out hacking by the end of the summer 2021 to gain life experience and see the world. You can see him below with one of his field buddies out for a calm stroll in the woods which meant he had the opportunity to ride out in all 3 paces over that summer.

He was very clumsy and in the winter of 2021 he slipped over whilst goofing around in the field and hurt his hock. He wasn’t lame but his hock did swell up. Once the swelling calmed down he was scanned to find no damage just signs of a severe bruise. That injury saw him back into work in March 2022 as we took this time to give him a little ‘baby break’ off ridden work. Lots of hacking but introducing more school work as a 4yo through the summer of 2022. However, due to covid we didn’t take him out to any events for 2021 or 2022.

Stunning Big Lad

During the middle of the winter 2022 we realised something was wrong as he became very reluctant to move forward and sensitive when we touched his tummy. We got him scanned by the vet who discovered some stomach ulcers. These were very successfully treated and he was rescanned at the beginning of 2023 to be declared fit and free from ulcers by the vet (all vet history is available on request).

Since then we’ve built back his fitness and encouraging him again to move forward freely, since he is now without pain.

Just after Easter 2023 he went away to a professional eventer to take his training to the next level with all the necessary facilities on site. This has allowed us to see him over jumps to understand how we’re just scratching the surface of his potential. However, it has also highlighted that even though this horse might have the potential to do more when he is 6 or 7 currently as a 5 year old he is a safe and sane riding horse.

Likes and Dislikes

For me this is actually a difficult section to complete as Clover is a very simple and straightforward horse.
Due to his size and age he does need firm handling to ensure he doesn’t take the mickey out of the handler but from the moment we first sat on him he’s been very straight forward to ride.

He is not sharp or spooky and generally takes everything in his literal stride, never silly and really doesn’t act his age. He’s good with the farrier, for both hot and cold shoeing. Also, he has regularly seen the dentist and we recommend he next see a dentist in Nov 2023. From everything we’ve seen he’s great to travel. We have loaded him here and travelled him in a trailer and prior to coming here they loaded him into a large lorry, in which he was delivered to us from Ireland. He’s only been clipped once but stood perfectly from the first time those clippers came out.

Clover is happy to either live out or in the winter come in at night. He’s a really good doer and likes his food, whilst with me he’s been on hay when stabled with chopped rape straw bedding.

He loves to hack out and I’ve taken him out both alone and in company, through fields and the local woods. When in company he’s as happy in front as he is behind. He’s always fabulous and although he’s not been ridden on the road whenever we’ve been past it he’s not bothered at all with traffic. However, we can’t say exactly how he would behave on the road as it’s not something we ever do.

A Very Chilled and Contented Clover

Future

It was our hope that Clover would be staying here as his forever home as my event horse and as a hacking horse for my husband. Unfortunately my husband has lost interest in riding and I can’t justify having 2 horses for myself (Clover to event and another I use for simple hacking) so we have had to make the difficult decision to find him a suitable home where he can be allowed to develop from the young horse he currently is.
We can see Clover fitting in at a professional yard where they understand the needs and discipline needed with young horses. This will then allow his new owner to open up his yet untapped potential as an eventer, giving this lad a good competition future. That said he currently is NOT showing any real interest or excitement about jumping and is quite hard work to get going forward.

In consultation with an accredited BHSI & professional event rider, we feel the perfect home would be a hunting home as a gentlemen’s hunter. He has a big stride that covers ground and he’s a big solid lad who would potentially be a great ride for a keen hunter. That said he has NOT hunted, nor has he jumped anything over 60cm’s nor over solid fences.
